User guide on restarting your computer to apply security updates and patches

Why Your Computer May Need to Restart

To keep your device and our network secure, security updates are applied automatically on a regular basis. Some updates require a restart to fully take effect. This guide explains what to expect and what to do when a restart is needed.

What Happens When an Update Is Ready

When a security update has been installed and requires a restart, you will see a reboot notification on your screen. You have two options:

  • Restart now – Immediately restart your computer to complete the update.
  • Postpone – Delay the restart by up to 24 hours.

⚠️ Important: If you postpone, the restart will happen automatically when the postponement period ends. Make sure to save your work before then.

How to Schedule Your Restart

If you choose to postpone, you can schedule the restart for a convenient time using the Schedule the Restart dialog:

  1. Under Pick a day, select Today or Tomorrow from the dropdown.
  2. Under Pick a time, enter your preferred hour, minutes, and AM/PM.
  3. Click Schedule restart to confirm.

💡 Tip: Make sure your PC is plugged in at the scheduled time. If it isn't available, Windows will automatically find another suitable time.

Active Hours – When Your PC Won't Restart Automatically

Your device is configured with Active Hours to prevent unexpected restarts during your workday:

Active Hours Start 8:00 AM

Active Hours End 5:00 PM

Your computer will not automatically restart during these hours.

Tips to Avoid Losing Your Work

  • Save frequently whenever a restart notification is active.
  • Schedule your restart for after business hours (e.g., 5:45 PM) to minimize disruption.
  • Do not leave unsaved work open overnight or during periods of inactivity.

Why This Matters

Security updates fix vulnerabilities that could put your personal data and company systems at risk. Completing them promptly helps protect everyone. If you have questions or need help, please contact your IT support team.
